An efficient hybrid approach for medical images enhancement

    Get PDF
Medical images have various critical usages in the field of medical science and healthcare engineering. These images contain information about many severe diseases. Health professionals identify various diseases by observing the medical images. Quality of medical images directly affects the accuracy of detection and diagnosis of various diseases. Therefore, quality of images must be as good as possible. Different approaches are existing today for enhancement of medical images, but quality of images is not good. In this literature, we have proposed a novel approach that uses principal component analysis (PCA), multi-scale switching morphological operator (MSMO) and contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) methods in a unique sequence for this purpose. We have conducted exhaustive experiments on large number of images of various modalities such as MRI, ultrasound, and retina. Obtained results demonstrate that quality of medical images processed by proposed approach has significantly improved and better than other existing methods of this field

The occurence of facial eczema due to intoxication with Pithomyces chartarun in 12 hairy sheep in the flock of Centro de Pesquisa Agropecuária do Trópico Úmido (CPATU) of Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (EMBRAPA) is described. These animals, maintained exclusively on Quicuio of Amazônia (Brachiaria humidicola) pasture, presented the symptoms of anorexia, depression, lacrimation, oedema of the eyelids, itching, followed by loss of hair in nasal region, around the eye and ear, necrosis and desquamation of the epidermis of the skin. Following the observation of the initial symptoms, the animals were withdrawn from the pasture and treated with detoxifving agents with total recovery. The conidia of the fungus Pithomyces chartarum (Berk & Curt) M.B. Ellis were identified in the pasture samples. Ellis

Metabolomics-Driven Mining of Metabolite Resources:Applications and Prospects for Improving Vegetable Crops

    Get PDF
Vegetable crops possess a prominent nutri-metabolite pool that not only contributes to the crop performance in the fields, but also offers nutritional security for humans. In the pursuit of identifying, quantifying and functionally characterizing the cellular metabolome pool, biomolecule separation technologies, data acquisition platforms, chemical libraries, bioinformatics tools, databases and visualization techniques have come to play significant role. High-throughput metabolomics unravels structurally diverse nutrition-rich metabolites and their entangled interactions in vegetable plants. It has helped to link identified phytometabolites with unique phenotypic traits, nutri-functional characters, defense mechanisms and crop productivity. In this study, we explore mining diverse metabolites, localizing cellular metabolic pathways, classifying functional biomolecules and establishing linkages between metabolic fluxes and genomic regulations, using comprehensive metabolomics deciphers of the plant’s performance in the environment. We discuss exemplary reports covering the implications of metabolomics, addressing metabolic changes in vegetable plants during crop domestication, stage-dependent growth, fruit development, nutri-metabolic capabilities, climatic impacts, plant-microbe-pest interactions and anthropogenic activities. Efforts leading to identify biomarker metabolites, candidate proteins and the genes responsible for plant health, defense mechanisms and nutri-rich crop produce are documented. With the insights on metabolite-QTL (mQTL) driven genetic architecture, molecular breeding in vegetable crops can be revolutionized for developing better nutritional capabilities, improved tolerance against diseases/pests and enhanced climate resilience in plants

Retinal Blood Vessels Segmentation using Fréchet PDF and MSMO Method

    Get PDF
Blood vessels of retina contain information about many severe diseases like glaucoma, hypertension, obesity, diabetes etc. Health professionals use this information to detect and diagnose these diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to segment retinal blood vessels. Quality of retinal image directly affects the accuracy of segmentation. Therefore, quality of image must be as good as possible. Many researchers have proposed various methods to segment retinal blood vessels. Most of the researchers have focused only on segmentation process and paid less attention on pre processing of image even though pre processing plays vital role in segmentation. The proposed method introduces a novel method called multi-scale switching morphological (MSMO) for pre processing and Fréchet match filter for retinal vessel segmentation. We have experimentally tested and verified the proposed method on DRIVE, STARE and HRF data sets. Obtained outcome demonstrate that performance of the proposed method has improved substantially. The cause of improved performance is the better pre processing and segmentation methods

Role of spectator ions in influencing the properties of dopant-free ZnO nanocrystals

Towards fundamental studies and potential applications, achieving precise control over the generation of defects in pure ZnO nanocrystals has been always intriguing. Herein, we explored the rote of spectator ions (Co2+ and Ni2+) in influencing the functional properties of ZnO nanocrystals. The crystalline quality, phase purity, and composition of as-prepared samples were thoroughly established by powder X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy (TEM and STEM), and by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS). Despite the presence of Co2+ and Ni2+ ions in the reaction mixture, STEM-energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), XPS analysis, and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) revealed that the ZnO nanocrystals formed are dopant-free. Even so, their luminescence and magnetic properties were substantially different from those of pure ZnO nanocrystals synthesized using a similar methodology. We attribute the origin of these properties to the defects associated with ZnO nanocrystals generated under different but optimized conditions

Not AvailableThe climate change has made its strong footprint in the world to the scientific consensus. The foremost reason for this havoc is the emission of greenhouse gases mainly through the anthropogenic (human-caused) activities (Cook et al. 2016). The climate system is on the verge of facing a long-term irreversible impact in all of its components. Global warming, certainly, is one of the serious threats to our ecosystems (IPCC 2014). There will be further warming of the globe with the continued greenhouse gas emissions. The last few decades have witnessed a slow but steady escalation in the global temperature (Fig. 1) as well as atmospheric CO2 concentrations . In this chapter, the consequences of rising temperature and elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) on plants in general and Solanaceous vegetables in particular are elaborately discussedNot Availabl
